Illinois Real Estate Licensing and CE State Requirements

Broker Licensing
Requirements to obtain a Broker’s License (as of May 1, 2011):

  1. Must provide proof of age. Applicant must be 21 years of age, or at least 18 years of age if the applicant has attained the education required by Section 5-27 of the Act. Forty-eight semester hours are necessary to meet the requirements of Section 5-27;
  2. Must provide a high school graduation certificate or its equivalent (e.g., GED);
  3. Must include the required fee designated in Section 1450.130;
  4. Must provide one of the following:
    1. Documentation from the Supreme Court of Illinois stating that you able to practice law; or
    2. Proof that you have completed at least 90 hours of instruction in real estate courses, approved by the Advisory Council, in accordance with Section 1450.1105.

Broker Post-Licensing
Brokers licensed after April 30, 2011 will be required to complete a 30-hour post-license course and pass a provider-administered exam prior to their first renewal of their license. This course explains the practical application of real estate topics in the real estate brokerage as set forth in Section 1450.1105(f). Licensees taking the 30 hour post-license broker course, during their first renewal cycle, shall not be required to complete any additional continuing education during that pre-renewal cycle.

Broker Continuing Education
Brokers are required to complete the following education by April 30th of even numbered years:

12 hours of CE (6 hours core/6 hours elective).

Managing Broker Licensing
Requirements to obtain a Managing Broker’s License (as of May 1, 2011):

  1. Certification that the applicant is 21 years of age;
  2. A high school graduation certificate or its equivalent (e.g., GED);
  3. The designated fee indicated in Section 1450.130;
  4. Proof of one of the following:
    1. Documentation from the Supreme Court of Illinois stating that you able to practice law; or
    2. Proof that you have completed at least 165 hours of instruction in real estate courses approved by the Advisory Council in accordance with Section 1450.1100.

Managing Broker Continuing Education
Managing Brokers are required to complete the following education by April 30th of odd numbered years:

  1. 12 hours of CE (6 hours core/6 hours elective)
  2. 12 hours of Broker Management CE
