South Dakota Broker Associate Licensing Requirements

In order to earn your first South Dakota real estate license, you’ll need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a citizen of the U.S. or a resident of South Dakota.
  • Take 116 hours of real estate education in courses approved by the South Dakota Real Estate Commission. 
  • Comply with all application procedures, including fingerprinting and background check.
  • Pass the real estate licensing exam, including state and national portions.
  • Associate with a licensed Responsible Broker and provide proof of errors and omissions insurance prior to license issuance.

Getting a real estate license in South Dakota can take 5 to 6 months depending on how long it takes you to complete the 116 hours of required real estate prelicensing courses and pass both the state and national portions of the real estate broker associate exam.
While South Dakota does not have reciprocal agreements with other states, if you have a license in good standing in another state, you can apply for a South Dakota license after passing the South Dakota portion of the real estate licensing exam. You must also have a supervising broker who is licensed in South Dakota.
There are 142 questions on the South Dakota real estate exam, with 90 questions on the national portion and 52 on the state portion.
