Ohio Real Estate Licensing Information, Reciprocity, and Portability

Reciprocity: Ohio offers partial reciprocity in the following states: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

 

Steps to Real Estate License Reciprocity in Ohio:

  • Step 1: Must hold an out-of-state license substantially similar to Ohio’s real estate sales license or have a government certification from a state that does not issue a license
  • Step 2: The out-of-state license or government certification must have been held for at least one year before applying
  • Step 3: Actively practiced for at least 1 of the last 5 years, with a potential waiver by the Commission
  • Step 4: Complete an application and secure sponsorship from an Ohio real estate broker
  • Step 5: Pay a $135 application fee.
  • Step 6: Submit an Ohio and national background check
  • Step 7: Provide a letter of good standing for all jurisdictions in which you hold an out-of-state sales license or government certification
  • Step 8: Complete a consent to service of process statement
  • Step 9: Provide proof of completion of 20 transactions or equivalent experience as adopted by the Commission
  • Step 10: Pass the state portion of the Ohio real estate examination

Military Portability:

  • State agencies may issue temporary licenses to military spouses in good standing in another state 
  • Military spouses must submit to a criminal record check, if required 
  • All licensing fees for temporary licenses are waived
  • Temporary licenses are valid for a period not to exceed 6 years 
  • Licenses shall be issued within 30 days of receipt of an application or, if a criminal records check is required, within 14 days of receiving the results

To obtain a real estate license in Ohio, you must be 18 years old, be a legal resident of the U.S., complete the required 100 licensing course hours, be sponsored by an Ohio broker, and pass the national and state portions of the real estate salesperson licensing exam.
Students must complete 100 hours of licensing education. This includes 40 hours of Real Estate Principles and Practices, 40 hours of Ohio Real Estate Law, 10 hours of Real Estate Appraisal, and 10 hours of Real Estate Finance.
There is partial reciprocity in Arkansas, Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Applicants will still be required to take the 40-hour Ohio real estate law course.
